Photosensitivity and Flashing Imagery

A very small percentage of people may experience seizures, blackouts, altered vision, eye or face twitching, dizziness, or disorientation when exposed to flashing lights, rapid colour changes, or certain visual patterns. This can happen to people with no history of epilepsy or seizures.

Game Night Central uses animation throughout: celebration effects when a game is won, animated avatar frames and name effects, emotes, and per-game visuals. Some games embed third-party media. In particular, Song Guesser plays official YouTube music videos, whose visual content is created by third parties and is not produced, reviewed, or altered by us. Music videos can contain strobing and rapid cuts.

Stop playing and consult a doctor if you or anyone playing with you experiences any of these symptoms. If you or a family member has a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.

Play in a well-lit room, sit back from the screen, use the smallest screen that is comfortable, and take a 10 to 15 minute break every hour.

Turning Effects Off

Open the account menu in the top-right corner, expand System Settings, and switch on Reduce Effects.

This stops flashing, strobing, looping animation, and celebration particle effects across the entire site, including inside game lobbies and during play. Colour, layout, and the meaning of every effect are preserved; only the motion stops. Sound and background music have their own switches in the same panel.

The setting is saved to your account when you are signed in, so it follows you to your other devices. As a guest it is remembered in your browser. If your device or operating system already has a “reduce motion” setting switched on, we honour that automatically without you needing to do anything here.

Standards We Aim For

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the standard referenced by EN 301 549 and the European Accessibility Act.

Two of those criteria matter most for a site full of animation, and we treat them as requirements rather than goals. Under 2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold, nothing we author flashes more than three times per second. Under 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide, any motion that starts on its own and repeats can be stopped by you, using the Reduce Effects switch described above.

Known Limitations

We would rather tell you what does not work yet than claim everything does.

  • Third-party video. The YouTube player embedded in Song Guesser is controlled by YouTube. Reduce Effects cannot change what plays inside it. If flashing imagery is a risk for you, avoid that game.
  • Third-party advertising. Advertisements are served by external networks and their visual content is outside our control.
  • The accessibility toolbar. Our third-party accessibility toolbar opens from the round button in the bottom-left corner, and it loads only when you press that button. Once you have used it, your browser loads it for you on later visits. It is not available inside game lobbies, because it conflicts with the live game view. The Reduce Effects switch works everywhere, including there.
  • Fast-paced games. Several games are timed and cannot currently be played at a slower pace. Timing is part of how they are scored.
  • Colour as information. A few games use player colour as a way to tell players apart. Names are shown alongside in most, but not yet all, of them.

Reporting a Barrier

If something on Game Night Central is unusable for you, tell us and we will treat it as a defect. Email support@gamenightcentral.net or use the contact form. Please say what you were trying to do, which game or page you were on, and what got in the way. We aim to respond within five working days.

Our health and photosensitivity warning also appears in our Terms of Use.
